The Quilting Bee

by Fannie Lou Spelce, painted in 1968, is the re-creation ofa familiar scene of over half a century ago in the artist's childhood home. Quilting was a winter sport for the ladies of the community of Dyer, Arkansas. They met each month and usually finished their project in a day's time. Aunt Lucy is at the piano. PawPaw (because it was a bad day out) huddles in the corner over hot chocolate, the Bible and an occasional nap. This painting has been featuredin an exhibition at the American Museum of Folk Art in New York City.
